Like every year on St. Nicholas Day, namely on December 19, 2021, the opening of the main New Year trees was held in most Ukrainian cities. How they look in the largest cities of the country, how much they cost, as well as what New Year's events one can visit in these cities for the New Year holidays 2021—2022—in The Page’s article.

The main New Year tree in Kyiv 2022: Where to go for the weekend

The grand opening of the main New Year tree of Ukraine was held on December 18 on St. Sophia Square. This year it is 31 meters high, decorated with 20,000 red and gold baubles and with a 10-kilometer garland around it. There is a New Year's fair, an ice rink, and the largest nativity scene in Europe next to the tree.

As the Department of Culture of the Kyiv City State Administration reported to The Page, the capital's budget provides 5.3 million UAH for organizing New Year and Christmas celebrations this year. Of the given amount, almost 900,000 UAH were used on installing and connecting the main New Year tree. The organizer of the New Year's celebrations, namely the company Global-Decor, that purchased the New Year tree itself, decorations, tinsel, garlands, etc., undertook the co-financing of the celebrations.

However, the location on St. Sophia Square is not the only one in Kyiv that you can visit during the New Year holidays. Other popular locations are:

  • Podil (on Kontraktova Square and on Petro Sahaidachnyi Street), where a New Year tree is also installed, there is an ice walking skating rink, a fair, amusements, and even a music stage;
  • near the Peoples' Friendship Arch and in the Central Park of Culture and Leisure, the Christmas Gallery on the Arch will work until January 23, 2022. There are many lights, installations, and an area with heated tables and warm drinks;
  • a New Year tree was also put up in Taras Shevchenko park. Here you can see the residence of St. Nicholas, stage, photo zone, and food courts;
  • Another New Year's location popular among Kyiv residents is the Winter Country at VDNG (Expocenter of Ukraine), where you can go to ice rink of 2,500 square meters, visit the New Year's fair, ride winter slides, etc.;
  • New Year's Roshen Winter Village where you can go skating and visit the food court area.

New Year's celebrations in Vinnytsia

Last year, it was decided not to put up the main New Year tree in Vinnytsia because of the coronavirus pandemic, but this year it was nevertheless put up. The lights on the 28-meter beauty lit up on December 19.

As the Executive Committee of the Vinnytsia City Council told The Page, almost 3.2 million UAH was provided for arranging and maintaining New Year trees in the city, as well as for decorating the territory and holding New Year events.

What New Year's events one can visit in Vinnytsia

New Year's locations in the city were set up in Leontovych сentral park, on Independence Square, and European Square. For instance, in Leontovych сentral park, Winter Village will work. There you can visit the fair, skating rink, amusements, slide with disk sleds. Celebratory visual projects will work on Independence Square and European Square.

Also, from 19 to 14 January, near the main Christmas tree of the city, you can visit concerts, festivals, competitions, discos, karaoke shows, etc.

New Year 2022 in Lviv

New Year's and Christmas events in Lviv are held from December 17 (when the city's main tree was lit up) until January 23, Galyna Pelykh, Acting Head of the Communications department in the Lviv City Council, told The Page.

It is interesting that in recent years the tradition has begun in the city that the region residents present the city's main New Year tree. "In particular, a resident of the village of Obroshyne presented this 17-meters tree," she said.

Almost 1 million UAH was allocated from the city budget for the winter celebrations. This amount includes not only events, fairs, etc., but also putting up the New Year trees on the territory of the Lviv city territorial community and in all nearby settlements—the cities of Vynnyky. Dubliany, the villages Briukhovychi, Rudne, Malekhiv, Velyki Hrybovychi, Mali Hrybovychi.

What you can visit in Lviv during New Year-2022 holidays

In general, despite the fact that the city refused to hold major events due to the coronavirus pandemic, you can still visit a number of events in Lviv during the New Year holidays, for example: putting up a Christmas didukh, holding festivals and the like. During the festive period, the city is planning to hold thematic performances, concerts, and festivals in accordance with the quarantine restrictions.

Moreover, on Svoboda Avenue and Market Square, a Christmas fair with 140 houses will work until January 20.

New Year tree in Mykolaiv

The New Year tree in Mykolaiv was also lit up on December 19, but there was no official opening because the city is in the "red" zone of the coronavirus. More than 550,000 UAH were allocated from the city budget for decorating the Christmas tree, decorating the city and holding relevant events, the Executive Committee of the Mykolaiv City Council told The Page.

Next to the city's main Christmas tree, you can visit various amusements, an ice rink, and a fair.

New Year celebrations in Cherkasy

The opening of the main Christmas tree 2021—2022 in Cherkasy, decorated with sweets, mittens, and hats, was held on December 19. The cost of its putting up, renovation, and other New Year's installations reaches more than 5.2 million UAH, the Executive Committee of the Cherkasy City Council told The Page.

From December 17 to January 1 you can visit many events on Soborna Square in the city, namely: festive New Year's concerts, art project "Festive New Year's Eve", New Year's run, various master classes, the residence of St. Nicholas, etc. The city residents and guests can also visit the Christmas fair.

How New Year is celebrated in Odesa

Odesa's main New Year tree, decorated in a marine style, was lit up on Dumska Square on December 19. According to the information of the movement Chesno (Honestly), local authorities allocated 12.7 million UAH for the celebration, 5.6 million UAH of which were spent on purchasing 75,000 presents for children.

According to the information on the city official website, New Year's celebrations in Odesa will last from December 18 to January 8. For instance, performances and concerts will be held on Dumska Square, including the celebration of the New Year itself, holiday fairs will work on Krymsky Boulevard and on Academician Glushko Avenue, and a delicacies village and a New Year's carousel will work on Primorsky Boulevard. You can visit the skating rink in the Kyivskyi District, and on January 7, watch the Christmas parade of trams on Starosinna Square.

How Kharkiv is decorated for the New Year

In Kharkiv, the main 30-meter tree has already been lit up. The Kharkiv City Council did not respond to our request, however, according to the information on the Council's website, you can visit a traditional fair (with food courts, food and non-food products) and an open-air skating rink located near the main New Year tree of the city.

In the Fantasy Park, daily entertainment shows with animators will be held, fabulous photo zones will work, and an open-air theatrical show Mriy (Dream) will be heald on the park stage on every day off.

Another popular area among Kharkiv residents and guests of the city is Gorky Central Park for Culture and Recreation. Here, from December 25 to January 9, events dedicated to the New Year and Christmas will be held, namely: various performances by artists, children's shows, creative workshops, discos, and the House of Santa Claus will work.

Main New Year tree of Zaporizhzhia

The opening of the main New Year tree in Zaporozhye and the regional New Year and Christmas festival was held on the eve of St. Nicholas Day—on December 18. The city budget allocated 10.5 million UAH for New Year's expenses this year. Local business is also helping the city in this, the Executive Committee of the Zaporizhzhia City Council told The Page.

The New Year's event marathon will be held from December 16 to January 18 at the main New Year's locations of the city, namely: in Mayakovsky Square and Mayakovsky Avenue, on the "Cossack circle" on the Khortitsa island, on the fountain cascade Raduga (Rainbow), on Shevchenko Boulevard, on Festival Square. On the main square of the city, there is a skating rink, playgrounds and amusements for children, as well as the European New Year's Village.

How New Year is celebrated in Dnipro

The New Year tree in Dnipro has already been lit up as well, despite the fact that there was no official opening of the tree. The press service of the City Council did not respond to The Page's request, but as the outlet Suspilne reports, the tree cost the city 9 million UAH. 51 UAH million was spent on decorating the city for the holidays.

As for the festive events in Dnipro, an entertainment show for the city residents and guests is provided. For example, a festive concert will be held on New Year's Eve on the European Square. In addition, starting from December 19, a New Year's tram will start running around the city.

New Year tree-2022 in Poltava

A 20-meter New Year tree was lit up in Poltava on Teatralna Square on St. Nicholas Day. According to Chesno, 337,000 UAH were allocated from the budget to decorate the city.

But there is no information about the New Year's celebrations in the public domain, and the city authorities did not have time to respond to The Page's request by the date of the article publication.
